The Creative Muscle – The Gym for Creative Minds
Most people think that being creative is something that is born with us. And there’s no way to practise or to become better at it. So, those who are born creative are lucky!
I admit it: I always said I wasn’t creative. Guess what? I was wrong!
I can be as creative as I want to! I can create my own creative habits, my rituals, I can practise in order to be more creative.
But how can I practise being more creative?
CREATE CREATE CREATE!
That’s the secret sauce… When you are always creating, you are improving your creativity muscle. Some things you create won’t be good. But who cares?
If you create a ton of stuff, some of them will be good. And that’s what matters the most.
The best thing is:
The more you practise, the better your creation will be. And the stronger your creativity muscle will grow.
It’s like going to the gym. If you go to the gym every day to grow your arm muscles (and you put effort while doing the exercises), your muscle will eventually start to improve and grow.
That’s the same with the creativity muscle.
The more you train it, the better it will become!
Now, I’m not complaining anymore about my lack of creativity. Actually, I’m self-aware that I always said that, because I wasn’t good in manual arts (like drawing or painting).
Some people (including myself, in the past) associate creativity with the ability to draw and create awesome art pieces. And in that subject, I’m not good. But I can be if I want to.
I’m sure that if I practised a lot, I would become way better.
But creative work isn’t only related to artists. Actually, creativity is everywhere, in any type of work or job you do!
You can be creative while you are gardening. You can be creative in the way you do your biology assignment. You can be creative while you exercise in the gym.
When you understand that creativity is everywhere, and it is here to be used by everyone, your perspective changes.
It’s amazing how my life changed when I simply understood this. I’m now looking for ways to be more creative in the things I do.
So, if you are willing to become more creative (which you should), go ahead and start practising your muscle today.
Write 10 different ideas about any topic. You might be thinking: “I don’t have 10 great ideas to write about…”
Who said they needed to be great? Write 10 ideas. They can be terrible! But write 10 ideas. Some of them will be good, others horrible. That’s ok.
In fact, when you feel like running out of brilliant ideas, write a ton of horrible ones.
I learnt this method with James Altucher. And it’s brilliant, it works really well to exercise your creativity muscle.
